The day before President Barack Obama holds a campaign rally at Virginia Commonwealth University, he’ll visit a high school in Arlington to talk with students and parents about student loan interest rates.

On Friday, Obama will speak with Washington-Lee High School juniors and seniors and their parents “about the need to prevent interest rates on federal subsidized student loans from doubling on July 1,” according to the White House.

The White House has called on Congress to stop the doubling of the subsidized Stafford student loans. The interest rates are scheduled to go from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1.

On Saturday, the president and First Lady Michelle Obama will hold a rally at VCU’s Siegel Center. Obama is expected to meet with VCU President Michael Rao before taking the stage.

UPDATED: Republican National Committee spokeswoman Allie Brandenburger said in a statement that “The truth is, after three years of failed promises and empty rhetoric, President Obama hasn’t delivered the jobs or the college affordability he promised to students. With young Americans suffering disproportionately in the Obama economy, there are no lofty slogans or campaign events that can erase President Obama’s failed record with students.”
