Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has added Ed Gillespie as a senior adviser to his campaign.

Gillespie, the former Republican National Committee chairman, has connections to Republican politics in Virginia, having served as general chairman of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s 2009 gubernatorial campaign.

McDonnell has endorsed Romney, campaigned for him, and is often mentioned as a vice presidential possibility.

Gillespie also served about six months as head of the Republican Party of Virginia before leaving in June 2007 to join the George W. Bush White House.
