It’s Sen. Steve Martin’s first time chairing a committee in the Virginia Senate, and yesterday the Chesterfield Republican learned what NOT to say during a hearing.
During testimony on legislation that would allow school districts to start classes before Labor Day, a woman representing Virginia Beach hotels and motels was explaining her group’s opposition to the bill. As an aside, the attractive spokeswoman apologized for coming to the hearing dressed casually in furry ski boots, explaining that she was heading to a ski weekend afterward.
“I’m hoping to join you tomorrow,” Martin volunteered to the packed room, before immediately realizing the impression left by his imprecise words.
“Not you, specifically,” he corrected, turning red as the full house began to chuckle.
“The more, the merrier,” the woman quipped.
“As soon as I said that…” Martin began.
“I’ve got room in my minivan,” she chimed in.
Martin later explained that it’s hard to make him blush, but the moment was especially embarrassing considering he just became engaged to be married. The future Mrs. Martin, he assured the audience, will be accompanying hinm on his own ski trip this weekend.
